MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Mentoring

At Nexus Artspace, our mentorship program is designed to be a vital resource during key moments in your creative journey, offering unique insights and guidance tailored to your needs. Our mentors are here to listen, provide feedback, and support your growth with a perspective you might not find elsewhere.

Through our mentorship, you’ll receive personalized support to excel in your practice and career. Our mentors will help you reach your goals, introduce innovative ways of thinking, challenge any limiting assumptions, and offer critical feedback to help you advance.

While each individual's needs are different, we recommend a minimum of five 90 Minutes sessions to build trust, address core challenges, and focus on your priorities. This foundational work sets the stage for transformative progress.

During our first meeting, we will determine the number of sessions based on your specific goals.

In each session, we provide a safe and constructive space to explore your strengths, values, and aspirations, as well as to tackle any creative obstacles or unhelpful assumptions. Our aim is to clear the path to achieving your goals.

Building a trusting relationship is essential for meaningful dialogue and collaboration. Once established, this trust fosters a partnership where we explore alternative perspectives and strategies, working together to overcome barriers and unlock your full potential.

We have a flexible, collaborative approach that responds to your needs, such as:

a) Evaluate your artistic work and the evolution of your creative path so far.

b) Clarify your objectives and priorities—what are your true aspirations?

c) Identify obstacles and challenges that may be blocked your progress.

d) Investigate potential opportunities for growth and development.

e) Discover and implement new tools, techniques, and methodologies.

f) Define new goals and create actionable plans to achieve them.

g) Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements and milestones.

We will discuss your work, key drivers, recurring themes and obsessions and how you articulate it to a broader public. Interrogating new work, discussing prices, sales and income-generating strategies are often in the mix too. We assess ways to improve your communication styles and devise a strategy to help you reach new clients, curators, collectors.

Every artist is different and therefore every mentoring and coaching relationship is different. We need to determine what your needs are so we can see what level of support is required, who is the best person to help, and in what time frame. Therefore, the costs are different for each artist. Results are borne out of a positive productive relationship, and we know that we get the best results from a minimum of five one-hour sessions together. Once you have registered, we will assess your requirements and aim to come back to you as soon as possible.

If you are applying for funding, please budget for a minimum of $100 (USD) per hour to work with an experienced mentor.

Preparing for a mentoring session
Checklist:

To make the most of your mentoring session, please prepare as follows:

  • Identify and summarize the top 3-5 challenges you wish to address during the session.

  • Gather and share relevant images, links, texts, and information that represent your practice from its inception to the present. Choose visuals that best reflect your artistic journey.

  • If not already provided, send your current CV and artist/creative statement.

  • Be ready to discuss your creative journey, including your achievements, existing networks, significant developments, obstacles, and your future aspirations.

  • Prepare questions in advance and feel free to ask them throughout the session. Be open to feedback and respond honestly.

  • Take notes if needed, but ensure that it doesn’t hinder your active listening and engagement in the discussion.

  • Set up your space to be comfortable and ensure that only relevant materials are visible. You might display some of your work or choose a setting that reflects your practice and processes.

  • Choose a time for the session when you will be free from interruptions, such as phone calls, emails, or other distractions.

What to Expect at the Start of Your Mentoring Session:

The session will begin with a brief introduction from me, followed by an opportunity for you to:

  • Introduce yourself and give an overview of your life, work, and career trajectory.

  • Highlight the main challenges you’re facing.

  • Share examples of your work or describe experiences that illustrate your points and challenges.

Next steps

We will work together to address your specific challenges by exploring your motivations, inspirations, and the driving forces behind your work. You will have the opportunity to discuss your ideas and creative processes, review how you’ve marketed yourself so far, and receive confidential support for any issues you’re facing.

By examining your work and listening to your insights and concerns, we will gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation. This will enable us to identify and set short-, medium-, and long-term goals, as well as create a tailored action plan.

During the session, we will provide feedback on your work and discuss key takeaways from our conversation. We may offer recommendations such as new avenues or materials to explore, useful tips, and examples of other practices that could illuminate relevant aspects of your own work.

Outcomes

By the end of the session, we will have developed a clear action plan with specific, manageable tasks and goals tailored to your ambitions and available resources.

We will also establish a realistic timeframe for implementing these new strategies, ensuring that the schedule aligns with your personal commitments and availability.
